Skirts over trousers trend; Celebrities wearing the 90s look

Publish date: 2024-06-09

Here's something we never thought we'd hear ourselves saying: skirts over trousers are making a comeback.

It's a trend that might make even the most fashion indifferent shudder, but there was once a time - circa 1998, when camo print was also a thing - when we'd pull on our favourite pair of denim jeans AND denim skirt at the same time. Was it that we couldn't decide on an outfit, so we just wore both for the sheer hell of it? Did we think it added a certain something to our look? We're trying to get into our pre-teen mindset and failing, here...

Either way, it's time to shed any bad feelings we had towards the combo and reembrace it, as the tricky trend is popping up more and more on the catwalks: Celine, Toga, Marni and Emilio Pucci all showed variations of the look in their recent autumn/winter '16 and spring/summer '17 shows.

The skirt (or dress) over trousers trend was first made popular by the likes of '90s girl group B*witched, and championed by early noughties bands like Girls Aloud. While these days, it's becoming a favourite with street style stars and was seen in abundance on the streets of New York, London, Paris and Milan.

It's also gaining traction on the celebrity fashion circuit, with stars like Gigi Hadid and Emily Ratajkowski somehow making the trend look, nearly well... cool.

Yep, we think we're coming around... can you?
