Is Owen Wilson Close With His Brother Andrew? A Glimpse Into Their Relationship

Publish date: 2024-06-07

Owen Wilson credits his elder brother and actor, Andrew, for getting him through one of the worst periods of his life.

While it is not rare to see siblings dominate the movie scene in Hollywood, Owen Wilson and his brothers are one of the pioneers of this movement. The trio exemplifies positive sibling rivalry by encouraging one another and working together whenever possible. Andrew, Owen, and Luke are recognizable figures in the industry due to their work on multiple movies, individually and collectively.

Although Owen is the most famous of the boys, his brothers are also Hollywood stars in their own right. Andrew Wilson, born in 1964 in Dallas, like his brothers, is the oldest of the lot. Like Owen, Andrew is also a talented actor and director and has worked on many notable movies, including “Whip It,” and “Fever Pitch.”

Since the early 1990s, he has worked in the entertainment sector, making appearances in over twenty films. Andrew got married to an African American woman named Nnogo Obiamiwe in 2003. They welcomed their son Joseph Obiamiwe Wilson, also known as Joey, that same year. Unfortunately, their marriage didn’t last long.

Owen Wilson Shares a Special Bond With His Brother Andrew

Andrew and Owen are undoubtedly the closest of the Wilson brothers. Their relationship started off very well as kids because they enjoyed riding horses together. As adults, the two are often inseparable, and they frequently appear together in films and events.

Owen and Andrew worked together in multiple Wes Anderson-directed films, including the famous “The Royal Tenenbaums.” They also starred together in “Bottle Rocket” and “Rushmore.” However, besides their on-screen work, Andrew was also there for Owen during a pivotal moment in his life.

In 2007, Owen made headlines for attempting suicide in his apartment. Thankfully, the ambulance arrived promptly to whisk him away to the hospital. Still, after he got discharged, Owen had to work to overcome his demons in the subsequent weeks and months.

However, Andrew stayed with his brother during this period and wouldn’t leave him alone. Andrew stayed in his house, waking with him each morning and writing up little itineraries for each day. Gradually,  life felt bearable for Owen at first, and with the consistent routine, he started feeling really good again.

Owen recently acknowledged his brother Andrew for assisting him in rising above his demons. He also praised his elder brother for helping him get through that incredibly difficult time. After the suicide attempt, Owen acknowledged

how grateful he felt about everything. He said:

“I’ve been in sort of a lucky place of feeling pretty appreciative of things. I know everything’s kind of up and down, but when you get on one of these waves, you’ve gotta ride it as long as you can. I’ve just felt—yeah. Feeling pretty grateful. Well, grateful’s one of those words that get used all the time. Appreciative. Of, you know, stuff.”

Meet Luke, the Youngest of the Wilson Brothers

Like his elder brothers, Owen and Andrew, Luke was also born in Dallas, Texas, on 21st September 1971. All three of Wilson’s siblings also attended the St. Mark’s School of Texas. According to Owen, Luke was elected class president during their first year in school, making him one of the smartest among them.

Luke also pursued a career in acting and has starred in films like “Old School” (2003), “The Royal Tenenbaums” (2001), “Bottle Rocket” (1996), and “Idiocracy” (2006). His other notable roles include “Goldfinch” alongside Ansel Elgort, “Legally Blonde,” and “Elle Woods.”

Owen Also Shares a Special Bond With Luke

Although Owen regularly appears with Andrew, the actor shares a special relationship with Luke. While speaking about his new romantic comedy “Marry Me” on Today in  February, the actor revealed that he and Luke recently shared a hotel room in Atlanta while working on separate projects. He explained:

“It was fun. It all comes rushing back to you, what you love about the guy and then what can also drive you crazy.”

Owen talked about how convenient it was to have someone to go out to dine with, watch sports with, and dispute with while they were both working on various tasks.

He also joked about how Luke nearly drove him crazy with his constant argument. However, the whole experience was fun, and he enjoyed it. However, when asked who was cleaner between the two, Owen gave a coy answer. He responded:

“I believe it depends on who you ask, but since you’re asking, I’ll say I’m the neat freak, and Luke was the slob.”

Still, it felt good for them to spend such quality time together amidst their busy careers. Also, Owen’s narration of the event showcased how close the siblings are and how their relationship only seems to get better.
